Phenol injection

Phenol is an oily substance that can be injected into the tissues around haemorrhoids that are inside the rectum. It relieves pain by numbing the sensory nerve endings at the site of injection. It also hardens the tissue of the haemorrhoid causing a scar to be formed by a process known as sclerosis. With time the haemorrhoids shrink and eventually disappear.
